Wood Floor Protection

Hardwood floors are an asset of a lifetime. You need to spend quite a significant amount of money in getting these special wood floors installed in your home. So, you would certainly need to take special care for it, don’t you? Here are some points that throw light on how best you can go about offering wood floor protection:

  • Cover areas of your home that have high foot-traffic i.e. the highly traveled zones of your floors with rugs and carpets to the maximum extent possible. This will minimize the exposure of your floors to damage not only from wear and tear caused by foot-traffic but also from spills and dust and grime. Similarly, place rubber mats in front of sinks and tubs so as to prevent water from falling directly on to the floor. This way you can keep the stains and ‘water spots’ caused by spills at bay.
  • You must never allow direct rays of the sun from reaching your wood floors. This can cause fading of the natural color of the floors. Making use of curtains, sheers, blinds etc. can help keep floors protected from the direct rays of the sun.
  • Clip the nails of your pets regularly to prevent scratches being formed on the wood floors. Also you must not allow your children to play with toys having hard/sharp wheels that can cause abrasion on the floor.
  • For minor problems- scratches, stubborn stain etc. you may try sanding of the floor and then refinishing it. An electrical sander can also be used on a low setting (so that you can control it) for sanding.
  • A daily sweeping and weekly application of a dampened cloth or mopping suffices as wood floor cleaning and maintenance regimen. You may even make use of specialized cleaning solutions upon recommendation from some professional to remove long-standing stains or marks.
  • Make sure to clean up spills immediately when they occurrance with a dry cloth. For sticky substances spilt you need use a wet mop first and then use a dry towel.
  • Try lifting furnishings around your home/rooms rather than dragging them along. You may also get felt or rubber contacts placed under their legs in order to avoid abrasions being caused from dragging.
