Wood laminate flooring versus real wood flooring

So you have decided to redo the floors. You have decided you are finally tired of carpet and want the look and feel of hard wood floors. But you have a problem---money. Wood laminate flooring may be the solution for your ailing wallet.

First, let's look at the difference between wood laminate flooring and real wood floors. Choosing hard wood floors is more than a decorating decision. Choosing hardwood floors is a natural choice. It can also be an improvement to the ambience of your home because hard wood does not trap dust and allergens like carpet can.

But unlike hard wood floors, which can be expensive, wood laminate floors are easier to install and won't force you to take out a second mortgage. Laminate floors can be installed on top of a concrete floor, plywood, or an existing hardwood floor and nearly any other hard and flat surface. Laminate flooring comes in interlocking pieces and is relatively easy and inexpensive to install. But you need to ask yourself a few questions first.

What are your long-term goals with regard to your new home? How long do you plan to live there? Have you established a budget? And does the resale value of your figure into your redecorating decision? Good questions all---and the answers will help you determine whether real hard wood floors or a wood laminate floor is your best choice.

If you plan to be in your home longer than 10 years and don't want to replace the floor again, real hard wood floors may be your best choice---the extra expense is worth it.

If you have established a budget of $4.00 a square foot or less, a wood laminate floor is your best choice. Though you can find real hard floors at $4.00 a square foot, the grade and quality of the wood will be less than you want.

Traffic will also be a huge deciding factor. If you have a normal family---you, your spouse, 2.4 kids and a dog---wood laminate flooring may be your best choice. With that kind of traffic, you can expect to be on constant watch for those unsightly dents and scratches with real wood. With wood laminate flooring, you won't have to stay on constant vigil. When you do need to replace the floor, it can be done cheaply and quickly.

So what's the best decision for your home? Answer these questions and you are well on your way to a beautiful new floor---whether it is real wood or wood laminate. Good Luck!
