Brighten a room by making your wood floor shine

A shiny wood floor and a sunny window or the right lighting can truly transform a room, and the shinier, the brighter! Properly finished wood flooring is also the easiest to clean and maintain, but even the cleanest of housekeepers can find themselves with a dulling floor. So how do you keep your flooring shining? Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

On solid hardwood (which most wood flooring is), it is best to dust the floor weekly, and to use a slightly damp cloth on spills, because water and wood do not mix well! As a matter of fact, the National Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association recommends never pouring water on wood flooring.

When cleaning wood flooring in general, it is best to use a minimal amount of water, so make sure you use a damp cloth rather than a wet cloth for optimum results.

Try to avoid using oil based cleaners on polyurethane finished floors, as it leaves a residue and can make buffing and cleaning more difficult in the future.

If you’re using a cleaner from the supermarket, yet your floors seem to look increasing dull with time, you might try using cleaner created by hardwood flooring manufacturers or floor finish manufacturers, as many others will have oils that will leave the floors waxy.

Use preventative measures like placing mats and rugs on heavy traffic areas, making sure you rotate and move rugs to prevent light markings, vacuuming regularly, wiping up spills quickly, and using fabric glides on the legs of your furniture.

These should help make for a long lasting, beautifully shiny floor.
