In-Floor Heat

Radiant in-floor heating is very popular nowadays, especially in cold regions where your teeth really chatter and your toes feel really numb! It is not very necessary in warmer climates, but is a boon otherwise. So if you are building a new home or remodeling your floor in a cold locality, go for it!

The radiant heat issuing from the floor beneath your feet can feel really snug and nice. If you are on a tight budget, then also it should work out for you, since it is not very expensive compared to the comfort it provides.

The principle is this. Pipes are embedded in the floor and heat, hydraulic or electric, is made to flow through these pipes. The house can be zoned like this if you feel like it, but it does not make a difference really as far as heat distribution throughout the floor is concerned. Some places may feel a little chillier than others, but you also save money this way on the zoning cost. To get the best of both worlds, you might consider placing the pipes two foot on center rather than the usual one foot, to ensure greater heat distribution.

As mentioned before, radiant in-floor heating can be hydraulic or electric. A simple inexpensive way to have radiant in-floor heating is to use a water-heater. Some states however, do not consider this legal. Check the provisions of your own locality regarding in-floor heat before doing this. To flow the water through the radiant pipes, water needs to be taken out of the base of the water heater through a drain cock. Then it has to be pumped through the floor. Then the water has to be returned to the water heater, thereby forming a closed circuit. This also reduces evaporation and wastage of water, so it is an environment friendly way. What else do you need? Additionally, whether you need to heat your home from underneath the carpet or tiles or hardwood, there are several easy-to-install systems available in the market.

So, you don’t have any more excuses for saying? It’s cold inside! Be snug.
