Floor Wax: Feel the Smoothness

You can use floor wax to restore the shine to a wood floor, or even to lend a wax finish to wooden furniture. Routine maintenance of woodwork requires more than just sweeping and vacuuming. You also need to protect the surface from moisture and scratches. Floor wax is a handy method of doing this by way of floor cleaning and restoring shines.

A good quality floor wax is a blend of selected waxes. A proper floor wax is easily applied, and gives a natural-shine finish to wooden floors, old or new. Quite a few high quality floor wax varieties are available, of different appearances. If you are looking for the right floor wax for your home, the first thing to do is to go for a brand that is advertised nationally and publicly. For these are the brands that are usually consumer right protected. When choosing a brand, the other qualities you should look for are whether it is easy-to-apply and non inflammable, whether it has a good coverage, and produces a soft sheen finish.

Floor wax finished floor are often subject to some common stains, but these are easily removed through proper care and application of floor wax. Most food stains go away upon rubbing the area, working gently with a damp cloth gradually inwards from outside, and then applying floor wax to the surface. Make sure that you dry the spot before using the wax. White spots from dried drops of water are easily rubbed out with a fine steel wool and a little mineral spirit; reapply floor wax and buff to match.

Scratches or marks in the surface of the floor wax finish can be treated by applying a small amount of floor wax to the area, and then buffing. However, the buffing must always be tested before adding another coat of floor wax.

A good floor wax produces a drying finish that nourishes, protects and maintains a perpetual depth of sheen and improves the beauty of your wood flooring.

One last word of caution: pay attention to the floor manufacturer's directions before using any cleaner or floor wax. If the instructions specifically prohibit waxing, you might run the risk of voiding the warranty. So check the papers before you proceed.
