Cleaning wood floors is an easy chore that can turn into a nightmare down the road if the right precautions are not taken
Dry, dust mopping is usually the preferred method of cleaning wood floors, but when more intense cleaning is required, mopping with a mop very lightly moistened with clean, clear water can be done if your floor finish is in good condition.
It is important to examine the floor’s finish before you use water, because if the finish is not in good shape in the slightest, the water can harm the floor. If your finish is in great shape, you have nothing to worry about, because water can not hurt your finish.
If you can not seem to get the luster and shine you want from regular cleaning, you may consider a coat of wax. A coat of wax will protect the finish from normal wear and tear, because the wax will form a barrier that will take the punishment instead of the floor’s finish. Wax can also be cleaned and reapplied, relatively easily.
Wax should only be used if you are not planning to completely refinish your floor anytime soon. If you do not strip the wax completely and properly it can cause problems with adhesion when you try to re-coat the surface of your new finish. This is why you should try to stick to simple dust mopping, the occasional damp mop, and the rare polish when absolutely necessary.
