Brazilian Cherry Flooring
In today’s wood flooring market, Brazilian Cherry, also referred to as Jatoba, is one of the most popular choices of hardwoods. One of the main reasons is that it is a very hard and durable wood, much harder than even Hard Maple.
The Durability
Having a good, durable hardwood for your flooring means that it will be less susceptible to moisture and other damaging elements. But not only that, having good hardwood flooring can also increase the value of your home. Not only is Brazilian Cherry one of the most durable woods available today, but it is also an oily wood, making it resistant to moisture.
The Price
Since it is such a highly sought after and high quality hardwood, it can be one of the more expensive wood flooring choices on the market today. Prefinished solid Brazilian Cherry hardwood can sometimes be found for under $5.00 per sq. foot, and run up to $7.00 per sq. foot for the highest grades. It can run as low as $3.40 to $4.00 per sq. foot if you buy it in shorter planks from one to three feet in length. As long as these planks are from the same species, you shouldn’t have much color variation with these shorter pieces.
When shopping for Jatoba, make sure it is actually from Brazil, this is where this high quality, highly durable wood grows. If someone tries to sell you Jatoba that is not Brazilian, you are likely getting a poorer wood and have a chance of being ripped off badly.
The Beauty
As durable as it is, it is probably most loved for its attractive appearance. The coloring ranges from an orange-brown to a deep reddish-brown, and has dark streaks running through the grain. Also, it darkens for several months after installation.
If you are looking for a good hardwood for your flooring, the durability of this wood along with its exceptionally lovely deep red and brown coloring makes it a great flooring choice.
